The Georgian president issued a decree aimed at promoting the civil sector and independent media outlets.

The decree, under which a non-profit legal entity will implement a project promoting the civil sector and independent media outlets, has already been published in the Legislative Herald of Georgia.

To this end, President Saakashvili has already allocated one million lari (1.657 lari = $ 1) from his reserve fund.

In accordance with Saakashvili's decree, a non-profit legal entity that will implement the project will be selected by competition and a Competition Commission will be created to oversee it and determine the winner.

According to the decree, the commission shall be staffed as follows. The chairman will be the adviser to the president and Former Deputy Foreign Minister Nino Kalandadze, and members will be other presidential advisers including Van Baiburt, Mubaris Karayev, Vera Kobalia and Natalia Kancheli.

"The Competition Commission should ensure the announcement of competition, determine the term and conditions of the competition and the list of documents required for participation in the competition. The Commission shall introduce the selected legal entity to the president for approval, to which in the case of the president's relevant decision, will be allocated one million lari to issue grants to media outlets and (or) the relevant organisations," the decree says.
