Iranian agricultural products exports up 14 per cent

Iran exported 3.2 million tons of agricultural products worth over 4.2 billion dollars in the previous calendar year ended March 20, the Deputy Director of the Trade Promotion Organisation of Iran, Kioumars Fathollah Kermanshahi said on Monday.

The figures show a 14 and 24 per cent increase in terms of value and weight, respectively in comparison to the preceding year, the IRNA News Agency quoted Fathollah Kermanshahi as saying.

Iran exported over one million tons of fruit worth some 786.7 million dollars in the previous year, he added.

The country's fruits exports faced a 29.8 and 25.8 per cent rise in terms of value and weight respectively compared to the previous year, Fathollah Kermanshahi explained.

Iraq, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan were the main destination markets for Iranian fruit, he said.

Iran is the Middle East and North Africa's greatest producer of garden products ranking eighth or ninth in the world, an official with the Ministry of Agricultural Jihad said on October 22.

Iran has been ranked between eighth and tenth in global fruit production in various years. In the production of pomegranates and pistachios Iran ranks first, in dates and cherries, third and fourth in the production of apples and walnuts and seventh in producing citrus fruits. 50 kinds of fruits are grown in Iran.
