Kyrgyzstan’s debt to China reached $1.7 billion on January 31, the press office of the Kyrgyz Finance Ministry said.
According to Sputnik Kyrgyzstan news agency, the amount accounts for 41.9 percent of the total foreign debt of the country, which exceeded $4 billion in late 2017.
The news agency noted that the foreign debt of the country to China is marginally less than the yearly budget of the republic. According to the state budget approved for 2018, its income part is roughly $2 billion.
In 2017, China granted Kyrgyzstan a $246-million loan. Russia, on its part, cancelled Kyrgyzstan’s $240-million debt in early 2018.
