Honey production in Iran’s Mazandaran province has increased 17 percent, Alireza Atayinejad, deputy director for livestock improvement at the Mazandaran Province Jihad Agriculture Organization, said in an interview with IRNA.

This Iranian year (started March 21, 2018) the province produced 6,608 tons of honey and ranked 4th in terms of honey production in Iran, he said.

He noted that last year, the province produced 5,647 tons of honey.

The reason for the increase in honey production is the support for beekeepers, he said.

This year, 10.6 kilograms of honey were collected from each honeycomb, he noted, adding that there are 623,433 honeycombs in the province.

“Considering that on average, 1 kilogram of honey costs about 500,000 rials (approximately $11.9), we will produce and sell honey worth 3.3 trillion rials (about $78.57 million) from our province this year,” he said.

“The number of hive frames in the province will increase by 5 percent," he said.

He noted that the average per capita consumption of honey in Iran is higher than in other countries. Thus, the average per capita consumption of honey is 950 grams in Iran, while it amounts to 250 grams in other countries, he added.
