Business activity slows in Uzbekistan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 12

By Ilkin Seyfaddini – Trend:

Negative changes were observed in the Business Activity Index (BAI) of Uzbekistan in April 2020 compared both to the previous month and the same month last year, Trend reports citing the Center for Economic Research and Reforms of Uzbekistan (CERR).

The main reason for the index decline is the introduction of quarantine in all regions of the country in late March 2020, the message said.

In April 2020, the Business Activity Index calculated by the Center for Economic Research and Reforms was 859 points (14.1-percent decrease compared to March 2020); 963 points (3.7-percent increase compared to April 2019).

The decline in the Business Activity Index in April 2020 was due to a 29.3-percent decline in the number of operations on the economic entities' bank accounts; an 8.7-percent decline in the component of the operating economic entities; an 8.7-percent decline in the intensity of raw materials' procurement on the commodity exchange; and a 75-percent decline in the component of trademarks.

However, in April 2020, the Business Activity Index for six regions increased as compared with the previous month (March 2020). Navoi (35.5 per cent), Khorezm (33.3 percent), Syrdarya (29.2 percent), Surkhandarya (8.3 percent), Bukhara (2.9 percent) and Jizzakh (2.7 percent) regions saw significant growth.

The rest of the country's regions saw a decline. The most significant decline occurred in Andijan (-16.5 percent), Ferghana (-13.3 percent), Samarkand (-8.9 percent) and Namangan (-8.1 percent) regions.
