Turkmenistan is receiving certain benefits of working with the USAID Future Growth Initiative, the representative of USAID told Trend.

"The five-year USAID Future Growth Initiative, launched in October 2019, is designed to spur productive economic activity across Central Asia, including Turkmenistan," said the representative. "In Turkmenistan, the USAID Future Growth Initiative is working in information technology and light manufacturing (small-scale carpets, leather, and handicrafts manufacturers) sectors."

The mentioned USAID’s work in Turkmenistan is carried out through its USAID Future Growth Initiative for Central Asian countries, which was launched in October 2019 and in order to spur productive economic activity across Central Asia, including Turkmenistan.

“The activity is focused on increasing the competitiveness of high-growth industries, generating jobs, and contributing to the region’s prosperity,” the representative said about the USAID Future Growth Initiative.

The organization pointed out that, thanks to this Initiative, Turkmenistan’s cadre of entrepreneurs in the information technology sector has already begun to develop.

The activity is focused on engaging private sector firms in technology and other high-growth industries to enhance their international competitiveness, noted the representative.

Considering the current situation with world economy, the effects of the COVID-19 spread across the globe, the countries are looking to find ways to keep up with the changing times. Turkmenistan, in particular, has been issuing support to local entrepreneurs.

"All countries around the world are grappling with the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. President Berdimuhamedov has on numerous occasions emphasized the importance of supporting entrepreneurs and small-and-medium-sized businesses as an essential part of post-COVID economic recovery," USAID said.

In particular, the representative highlighted that the USAID Future Growth Initiative and its beneficiaries will play an important role in that process.

To the date, there are no registered cases of coronavirus infection in Turkmenistan.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11 declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Some sources claim the coronavirus outbreak started as early as November 2019.
