Iran boosts exports via Astara railway

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jan. 9

The exports via the railway terminal in the Astara County of Gilan Province (northern Iran) have increased by 70 percent from the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2020) to Jan. 7, compared to the same period last Iranian year, Director of the Iranian Northern Railway Gholamhossein Valadi said, Trend reports citing IRNA.

Valadi emphasized that 159,000 tons of goods were exported to Azerbaijan via the Astara railway. However, about 93,800 tons of goods were exported in the same period last Iranian year.

Valadi added that the exported goods through the Astara railway terminal were mainly cement, chemicals, ceramics, and household appliances.

“About 285,000 tons of goods were transported through the Astara railway terminal over the reporting period. This is an increase of 8 percent compared to the same period last Iranian year. Thus, about 265,000 tons of goods were transported through the Astara railway terminal in the same period last Iranian year,” he said.

The director stressed that at the same time, 114,000 tons of goods were imported and more than 11,000 tons were transited through the Astara railway at the same time.

According to him, the imported and transited goods were mainly wood materials, lentils, wheat, and barley. The products were mainly transited to Iraq.

Valadi noted that more than 879,000 tons of goods were loaded and 1 million tons unloaded at the terminals under the control of the Iranian Northern Railway over the reporting period.

The loaded goods increased by 101 percent and the unloaded goods by 134 percent, compared to the same period last Iranian year.
