Iranian thermal power plants boost electricity generation

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 29. The electricity generation of Iran’s thermal power plants (TPPs) rose by six percent in the first month of the current Iranian year (from March 20 through April 20, 2024), compared to the same month last year, according to Director General of the Technical Affairs Department of Iran's Thermal Power Plants Holding Company (TPPH) Esmaeil Namazi, Trend reports.

Namazi said that the country's TPPs generated more than 24 million megawatts (MW) of electricity in the reporting month, compared to 15 MW in the same month of the previous year.

He also said that under the current government (from August 2021), eight units have been commissioned in seven TPPs, increasing electricity production over time.

The official added that four million MW of electricity production in the first month accounted for gas units, 5.5 million MW - steam units, and 5.5 million MW - combined cycle units.

To note, the electricity production potential in Iran amounted to 92,841 megawatt hours (MWh) at the end of the last Iranian year (March 19, 2024).

Meanwhile, the electricity production potential of Iran's TPPs was 75,643 MWh, making up 81.5 percent of the nationwide electricity production potential.

At the same time, the production potential of combined cycle units was 35,795 MW, gas units - 24,019 MW, and steam units - 15,829 MWh.
