British Foreign Secretary William Hague was in Beirut on Thursday for talks about the Syrian conflict and bilateral ties between Lebanon and Britain, dpa reported.

Hague conferred with Lebanese President Michel Suleiman and was to meet Lebanese army Commander General Jean Kahwagi.

The British official, who arrived late Wednesday in Beirut from Qatar, wrote on his twitter post that he will be hearing during his discussions with Lebanese officials about the political process in the country, as well as the Syrian crisis.

His visit coincides with tensions at the Lebanese-Syrian border between Syrian opposition fighters and the Shiite movement Hezbollah, a key regional ally of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

The rebel Free Syrian Army has warned that it will shell Hezbollah posts inside Lebanon if Hezbollah does not cease its alleged military activities in Syria.
