At least 1,000 Islamic activists joined a rally outside the national Baitul
Mukarram mosque in central Dhaka Tuesday calling for the scrapping of proposed
policy to improve the rights of women in Bangladesh, witnesses said.
The rally was organized by a militant Islamic group called the Islamic United
Alliance which has accused the army-backed interim government for violating the
injunctions of the Koran, Islam's holiest book.
Militant Muslim cleric Mufti Fazlul Haq Amini, who led the rally, branded the
policy that gives women and men equal status in the matter of inheriting
ancestral property as anti-Islamic and demanded its withdrawal.
