UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said that Tehran as a regional power should be part of the international conference on Syria, Tehran, Dec 24, IRNA reported.
Speaking to reporters, Ban said that he and Lakhdar Brahimi have repeatedly stressed the important and constructive role that Iran can play in finding a solution to the Syrian conflict and are still insisting that Iran should attend the upcoming conference in Switzerland.
Unfortunately the permanent members of the UN Security Council are divided over the participation of Iran and consultations are underway in this regard, he said.
Ban reiterated that if the participants really want the upcoming conference to yield good results, they should not ignore the importance of Iranˈs presence.
This is the second time that the UN secretary-general calls for Iranˈs invitation to the conference.
Analysts predict that Washington finally will have to agree with Iranˈs invitation to the conference for its prominent status in the region.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has said that Iran is ready to attend the conference if invited.
