Kazakh Senate ratifies OIC charter

Senate (upper house) of the Kazakh Parliament in its plenary session adopted a law "On ratification of the Charter of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation" - OIC (formerly the Organization of Islamic Conference).

Charter of the Organization was adopted in Dakar on March 14, 2008, during the 11th OIC Summit.

By a decision of the 38th session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers on June 28-30, 2011 in Astana, the Organization of Islamic Conference was renamed as Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

"Ratification of the Charter confirms the political commitment and intention of Kazakhstan to develop and strengthen cooperation with the OIC," the law adopted by the Senate says.

Kazakhstan joined the OIC in 1995. The OIC is one of the major international organizations bringing together 57 states with a population of nearly 1.5 billion people.

The development of efficient relations with the OIC is aimed at further strengthening of relations with Muslim countries, expanding the platform of initiatives, attracting financial resources of the Islamic Development Bank, participating in the political, economic and cultural processes in the Islamic world.
