Coalition for the European Georgia has urged parliament to introduce visa and financial sanctions to the Russian officials suspected of the tragic death of the lawyer Magnitsky.

The coalition is calling on Parliament to support the initiative of international human rights organisations and pass a law that will introduce visa and financial sanctions against those officials who are involved in the tragic death of the lawyer Magnitsky, who died while under arrest on trumped up charges evading payment of taxes.

Shortly before his arrest, Magnitsky published facts about the misappropriation of $230 million by senior officials from the Ministry of Interior of Russia.

According to the coalition, the law known as the Magnitsky Act was adopted, or is under consideration in the US Congress, the parliaments of Canada, the UK and other European countries.

In late July 2011 the U.S. State Department placed the names of about 64 Russian officials involved in the murder of Magnitsky on the black list for visas.

'The coalition believes the adoption of this law will show that Georgia as a nation, will never accept the violation of human rights regardless of it being against citizens of any country and those who committed such violations', the statement says.
