Deputy chairman and executive secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) Ali Ahmedov on Friday received a delegation from the European Parliament, the NAP press service told Trend.

The meeting discussed the current state of cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan and prospects.

Member of European Parliament from Portugal José Manuel Fernandes said that Azerbaijan is recognized as a modern and tolerant country and that Azerbaijan is an important country for the EU from geopolitical and strategic point of view. Describing Azerbaijan as a dynamically developing country, the Portuguese MEP said that he supports the fair settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict through a peaceful way.

Recognizing that the most painful problem of Azerbaijan is the issue of refugees and IDPs, the MEP from France Franco Gaston said that the EU will help Azerbaijan in this matter and that the EU is interested in deepening the existing cooperation with Azerbaijan in the energy sector.

Member of the Belgian Parliament Alan Destehin expressed satisfaction with the cooperation with Azerbaijan and praised the serious efforts of official Baku for further development of relationships.

Ahmedov told the guests that the most important question, of which solution is significant for the Azerbaijani society, is a fair solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Azerbaijani people also wait for a fair position from the international community and organizations on this issue. He stressed that the fair solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will be an impetus to strengthening the energy cooperation in the interests of the sides between Azerbaijan and Europe.

The sides also exchanged views on further development of existing relations and prospects of development of relations between the NAP and the European People's Party.

The meeting was also attended by the deputy executive secretary of NAP Mubariz Gurbanli.
