Society Materials 10 October 2007 17:19 (UTC +04:00)

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / Georgian Azerbaijanis want to receive some privileges in the Azerbaijani education system, participants stated during a roundtable dedicated to the education problems of Azerbaijanis residing in Georgia, held in Baku on 10 October.

Participants of the event said Azerbaijanis residing in Georgian Kvemo-Kartli region receive education in the Azerbaijani language and so cannot receive education in Azerbaijan. All foreigners can receive paid education in Azerbaijan, but the sum that foreigners must pay is more as compared to local students. Due to this reason Georgian Azerbaijanis cannot receive education free of charge in Azerbaijan.

The organizer of the event is the Georgian-Azerbaijani relations society of 'Korpu' (Bridge). The society proposes quotas should be issued for Georgian Azerbaijanis to receive education free of charge in Azerbaijani private Universities. The difficult socio-economic state of Azerbaijanis residing in Georgia means that many of them cannot afford to pay for education.

Participants of the roundtable approved the proposal and submitted the appeal to the Azerbaijani President, Ilham Aliyev. The appeal included a request to create conditions for Georgian Azerbaijanis to receive education in Azerbaijan free of charge.
