There are Objective Reasons for Delaying Journalists Meeting in Azerbaijan – Press Council Chairman

Azerbaijan, Baku, 19 February / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / The issue concerning summoning the next meeting of the Council of Press of Azerbaijan will be submitted to the Council for consideration, Aflatun Amashov, the chairman of the Council, said to Trend.

There have been opinions about the legitimacy of the Council of Press as well as delaying the meeting in the press. Amashov noted that the council was established during a meeting of journalists and would remain a legitimate department.

The last supreme assembly of the council was held on 23 December 2006. The fifth meeting of journalists had to be held in December 2007.

According to the Charter of the Council, chairman and members of the Council are elected during the meeting.

Amashov stated that the meeting was delayed for certain reasons. The Council of Press have been moving offices and developing a set of projects over the last six months.

The legitimacy of the council cannot be a reason to delay the meeting. "I cannot say who is interested in raising the issue of the legitimacy of the council. There is no need for alarm, we will consider the issue during the next meeting," Amashov said.

The Council of Press was established during the first meeting of journalists of Azerbaijan in 2003.
