Uzbekistan, Russia develop contract on construction of nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct. 6

By Klavdiya Romakayeva - Trend:

Survey work continues at the priority site for the construction of a nuclear power plant in the Jizzakh region in Uzbekistan, the representative office of Rosatom Central Asia LLP in Uzbekistan told Trend.

In September 2018, an intergovernmental agreement was signed on cooperation in the construction of a nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan under a Russian project. In October 2018, the presidents of both countries launched the project.

Rosatom plans to build a complex of two-generation 3+ power units with VVER-1200 reactors. The site near Lake Tuzkan in the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan was selected as a priority site for the construction of the station.

Earlier it was reported that Rosatom expects to conclude a contract for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan by the end of 2020.

Currently, the negotiating teams of both sides continue to work on the preparation of the EPC contract. At the same time, exploration work continues at the priority construction site of the station in the Jizzakh region.

In international practice, EPC (Engineering, procurement, and construction) is a method of contracting in the construction industry, which includes design and survey work, as well as the supply of equipment and the actual construction of the station.

“Since the contract has not been signed yet, it is too early to talk about its terms,” the office said.

To date, training is underway in the Tashkent branch of the National Research Nuclear University Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (NRNU MEPhI), opened in 2019. There have already begun training in four specialties Nuclear Power Engineering and Thermal Physics, Nuclear Physics and Technologies, Heat Power Engineering and Thermal Physics, Power Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. In 2019, 100 students were admitted to the branch, and another 100 students were admitted in 2020.
