Turkmenistan is exploring possibilities of cooperation with the Zelenodolsk plant named after A.M.Gorky, one of the Russian biggest and strategically important shipbuilding enterprises, Trend reports referring to Neytralni Turkmenistan newspaper.

During his recent visit to Kazan, the capital of Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov reviewed the products of the plant during the tour of the enterprise conducted by Director General of the plant Alexander Karpov, reports the company website .

Recently, Balkan Shipbuilding and Repair Plant OJSC was set up in Turkmenistan’s Turkmenbashi city. It has already started repairing bulk carriers and oil tankers.

As planned, the enterprise will build various ships, including RO-RO ferries for the transportation of wheeled vehicles (cars, trucks, trailers and wagons). In addition, it can carry out full repair of tankers, dry cargo ships, tugboats and other vessels.

The technological lines of the plant allow processing 10,000 tons of steel per year. Up to four vessels may be built and up to 20 vessels may be repaired there annually. The plant has been designed according to the requirements of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS).

The plant covers a total area of 166,000 square meters. The project was implemented by the Turkish Gap Insaat company.

After the commissioning of the new international sea port at the city of Turkmenbash, great opportunities have appeared for transporting the cargo supplied to Turkmenbashi along the Silk Road route from the countries of the Asia-Pacific region to European countries through the ports of Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran.

The annual throughput capacity of the port is 17-18 million tons. Combined with the capacity of the old port, this figure reaches 25-26 million tons a year.
