New Subway Station Likely to Open in Baku in 2008

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend A. Badalova / It is expected that a new subway station will open in Baku between August and September 2008, Tagi Ahmedov, the head of the Baku Metro said.

According to Ahmedov, it is also planned to open the Azadlig subway station by the end of 2009 or the beginning of 2010.

Afterwards, Ingilab subway station will be commissioned and it will be extended to the existing Mashadi Azizbayov or Ulduz lines.

The head of the Metro said that Baku Metro will celebrate its fortieth anniversary on 8 November 2007. Tremendous renovation work has been done lately, especially in the Nizami station.

According to Ahmedov, the Metro needs 225 train cars to function within its normal schedule. "We are obliged to use thirty outdated cars to cover the shortcomings. From 2002 to 2004 some seventy-five cars were purchased, or twenty-five cars a year. Next year, we plan on buying another fifty cars," Ahmedov said

The transportation expenses at the Baku Metro are the equivalent of AZN 0.62 per passenger, according to Ahmedov.
