The European Union called late Friday for a peaceful resolution in Tunisia as the country's president left the country on Friday after a month-long popular revolt that claimed dozens of lives, dpa reported.

"We urge all parties to show restraint and remain calm in order to avoid further casualties and violence," EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton said in a statement.

"Dialogue is key," she said. "We reiterate our engagement with Tunisia and its people and our willingness to help find lasting democratic solutions to the ongoing crisis."

Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali left the country on Friday after earlier firing his government and announcing early elections
