A 22-year-old Palestinian militant was killed on Tuesday in an Israeli air strike in the Gaza Strip, medical sources and witnesses said, dpa reported.

Jamil al-Najar, a member of the Islamic Jihad movement's armed wing, was riding a motorcycle when it was hit by a missile fired by an Israeli warplane in the southern town of Khan Younis, the sources said. A bystander was injured in the attack.

Over the past a few weeks, violence has increased in the Gaza Strip, which is ruled by the Islamic movement Hamas.

Militants have have stepped up attacks with homemade rockets on southern Israel, prompting Israeli retaliatory action and the threat of a large-scale offensive if Hamas does not rein in the attackers.

Hamas spokesman Taher al-Noono said the government is holding intensive contacts with the militants to keep things calm.
