Progress on Kazakhstan's polypropylene manufacturing project revealed

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug.20

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

Construction of a polypropylene manufacturing complex in Kazakhstan’s Atyrau region is completed by 74 percent as of Aug. 20, 2020, Trend reports with reference to the press office of Kazakhstan’s Samruk Kazyna Fund Sovereign Wealth Fund.

The construction is to be completed in 2021. The project will allow for production of up to 500,000 tons of polypropylene a year.

Earlier this year, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy Nurlan Nogayev said that there were some deviations from construction plan.

“Deviation from the plan was due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a disruption in the equipment deliveries and in the established system of work to attract foreign labor,” Nogayev said.

Previously, Austrian Borealis made a decision to suspend development of a polyethylene project in Kazakhstan.

The company said that the decision to discontinue the project is based on a thorough assessment of all aspects of the prospective venture and impacted by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the increased uncertainty of future market assumptions.
