BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 30. The process of connecting the power grids of central Tajikistan to the Central Asian Energy System (CAPS) through the power transmission line of Uzbekistan will be completed no later than April 2023, Trend reports via Tajik media.

The statement was made by Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan Daler Juma at a press conference on January 30.

He noted that so far this project has been implemented by about 85 percent. It will take more time to connect the power grids to the regional system in the north of Tajikistan.

Notably, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) at the end of 2018 allocated a grant in the amount of $35 million to reconnect Tajikistan’s electricity system to the Central Asian Power System (CAPS) through interconnection with the Uzbekistan system.

CAPS is a regional electricity transmission network created during the Soviet Union era, and its operation today is coordinated among Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. In recent decades, power exchange within CAPS has been in progressive decline, and Tajikistan’s disconnection from Uzbekistan in 2009 limited the effectiveness of an interconnected CAPS.
