The twentieth session of the Turkmen Parliament of the fourth convocation has opened in Ashgabat today, the Turkmen government said.

Preparation for the meeting was discussed at the last government meeting. Chairperson of the Turkmen Parliament Akja Nurberdieva gave an update on the activity carried out by parliament to improve the legislation of the country and develop the national legal system.

While hearing about the report, President Berdimuhamedov focused on a number of important areas of legislation.

"All legislative work must be subordinate to the practical interests of society," the Turkmen president said.

"The main task of the people's representatives is to represent the interests of the population and implement the country's social priorities and national legislation," he said.

The term of office of the Turkmen MPs is five years. The current senior composition was elected in December 2008.

Under the Turkmen Constitution, parliament passes laws, introduces changes and additions to the law, approves the state budget, decides on a referendum and calls a presidential election as well as overseeing elections of members of parliament and representative bodies.

It also considers the appointment and dismissal of the President of the Supreme Court, the Attorney General and Minister of Interior and Minister of Justice under a proposal by the head of state. It also ratifies and denounces international treaties, decides on changes of the state border and the administrative, territorial division of the country.
