Iran has the capacity to transit 30 million tons of goods to Central Asia via its rail network, the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways managing director said.

Abdol-Ali Saheb-Mohammadi added that Iran has developed plans to establish 10,000 kilometres of railroad across the country. A rail transit corridor will be extended from the Caspian Sea coast in Iran to Azerbaijan and then to Russia and Finland, which will reduce the current transport costs by 30 per cent.

Previously, Saheb-Mohammadi said that the Iranian national railroad system is now linked with the Syrian and Turkish networks and is also connected with Turkmenistan via Sarakhs.

Iran transited 478,136 tons of goods via rail network from March 20 till September 1, showing a 12 per cent rise compared to the same period last year, the deputy managing director of the National Iranian Railways Company stated.

The ILNA news agency quoted Ghazanfar Fooladi as saying that the figure is anticipated to reach 500,000 tons by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20, 2013).
