At least 56 people were killed as fierce winds and thunderstorms lashed India's northern and eastern states, officials said Thursday, reported dpa.

The storms hit northern Uttar Pradesh and eastern Bihar late Wednesday.

An estimated 30 people died in Uttar Pradesh, particularly the eastern districts that include Siddhartha Nagar and Jaunpur, an official in the disaster management division said.

"Eight members of a wedding party were killed when a tree fell on a jeep in Siddhartha Nagar," he said. "Other deaths were reported in house collapses."

Twenty six people died in squalls in neighbouring Bihar, state-run broadcaster All India Radio reported.
