The delegation led by president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNESCO and ISESCO goodwill ambassador Mehriban Aliyeva will participate in the General Assembly of the National Olympic Committees in the Russian capital Moscow on April 14, where the nomination of Baku to host the Olympic Games of 2020 will be presented, executive director of the Organising Committee of the Baku-2020, Kenul Nurullayeva said at a press conference on Wednesday.
Nurullayeva noted that the Azerbaijani delegation also included Deputy Prime Minister Yaqub Eyyubov, youth and sports minister Azad Rahimov, vice-president of the National Olympic Committee Chingiz Huseynzade and General Secretary of AFFA Elkhan Mammadov.
A 10-minute presentation dedicated to Baku-2020 will be held at the Assembly in Moscow, attended by 1000 representatives of the National Olympic Committees, Nurullayeva said. Baku has the biggest public support among the candidate countries.
Among the cities with the most applicants received with more public support is Baku, she said. "The survey found that 95 per cent of the population of Azerbaijan supported the Olympic Games-2020 in Baku and this is much bigger than the other candidate cities," Nurullayeva said.
As many as 494,000 signatures, 111,000 of which is accounted for by Baku were collected during the campaign to collect signatures in support of the candidacy of Baku, the executive director of the Organising Committee said.
The IOC approved the nomination of Baku as a contender to host the Olympics in 2020. An organising committee has been created in Azerbaijan in this regard.
Madrid, Rome, Tokyo, Istanbul and the capital of Qatar, Doha are contenders to host the Olympics in 2020 along with Baku.
The IOC will name the city where the Olympics will be held after a two-stage selection on September 7, 2013 in Buenos Aires. Azerbaijan's National Olympic Committee put forward the candidacy of Baku also for the Summer Olympics in 2016, but the IOC has given it to Rio de Janeiro.
