The National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan has presented a plan for sports facilities to be built, if Baku becomes the capital of the summer Olympic Games in 2020.
The International Olympic Committee provides information about existing and planned sports facilities and infrastructure, about their location and capacity in the 'Bid Book', as presented by Azerbaijan in Lausanne (Switzerland), vice president of National Olympic Committee Chingiz Huseynzade told Trend.

"These facilities will be constructed if Baku be the venue of the Olympics-2020," Mr Huseynzade said.

He also outlined plans for the construction of the Olympic Village. According to Mr Huseynzade, it will be located where the Azerneftyag oil refinery is currently located.
"The refinery is planning to move irrespective of whether the Olympics are held in Baku or elsewhere, but the Olympic village will be constructed only if Baku wins the venue for the Olympics-2020," he said. He also noted that the area of 150 hectares on which the plant is located would be sufficient for the Olympic village, with homes for sportsmen.

There would also be dining, recreation centres, clinics and other necessary facilities located.

With regard to the central arena that holds 60,000 spectators for the main Olympic competition, as well as the opening and closing ceremony, this will be built in Boyukshor.

The IOC approved the nomination of Baku as a contender to host the Olympics in 2020. An organising committee has been created in Azerbaijan in this regard.

Madrid, Rome, Tokyo, Istanbul and the capital of Qatar - Doha are contenders to host the Olympics in 2020 along with Baku.

The IOC will name the city where the Olympics will be held after a two-stage selection on September 7, 2013 in Buenos Aires.

Azerbaijan's National Olympic Committee put forward the candidacy of Baku also for the Summer Olympics in 2016. But the IOC has given it to Rio de Janeiro.
