Turkmen president inaugurated in Ashgabat

The inauguration of the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to a new five-year term will be held today in the Palace of Council of Elders in Ashgabat, an official Turkmen source said on Thursday.

The inauguration of the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to a new five-year term will be held today in the Palace of Council of Elders in Ashgabat, an official Turkmen source said on Thursday.

Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov gained 97.14 per cent of votes at recent elections where eight candidates took part in the presidential campaign.

Mr Berdymukhamedov was born on June 29, 1957 in the Babarap village of the Geok- Tepe district of the Akhal region in Turkmenistan. He is M.D, having graduated from the Faculty of Dental Medical Institute in Ashgabat in 1979 and from there to the postgraduate school.

He was appointed Minister of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan in 1997 and became deputy chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan in 2001.
In February 2007 Mr Berdimuhamedov gained 89.23 per cent of the votes in a previous presidential election and was inaugurated on February 14, 2007. The certificate of the post of President and the gold chain of office with an octagonal logo was presented to him.

Turkmen media widely reports the results of the presidential election held on February 12. The articles state that Mr Berdimuhamedov specified the priorities and perspectives of the future development of the state.

"First of all, it is a spiritual mobilisation of the society, without which modernisation and diversification of the national economy, the deepening of democratic and socio-economic reforms, human welfare and the protection of people's interests and rights would be impossible," Turkmen Dovlet khabarlary reported.

'A strong political and economic framework for the rapid advancement of our nation to a brighter future was created during Mr Berdymukhamedov's presidency', local media reported.
'We will not hurry nor artificially create and accelerate the socio-political processes in our society to suit anyone's sole interest'. The Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported quoting Mr Berdymukhamedov.

The president went on to say that 'Turkmenistan goes its own way and is aimed not at putting up flashy signs, but at thoughtful and consistent work'.
