Azerbaijan, Baku, November 25/ Trend , corr I. Alizade/ MPs of the governing New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) will bring up removal of the Constitutional Article banning a person from running for presidency for more than twice by referendum for the discussions in the parliament.
"We have our own opinion and we will disclose our proposal in next parliamentary meetings," MP Siyavush Novruzov, deputy executive secretary of NAP, said to journalists.
According to Item 5 of Article 101 of Azerbaijani Constitution, one person can not run for presidency more than twice. The term of presidential office is five years.
The governing New Azerbaijan Party proposes to remove the above-mentioned Article from the Constitution by referendum.
Chairman of the Constitutional Court Farhad Abdullayev said in his interview with Trend that changes can be made to the Constitution to extend term of presidential office.
Novruzov noted that the governing party has not yet discussed this issue. "The position of NAP is that the Article banning one person to run for presidency for more than twice must be removed from the Constitution," he added.
NAP official said that either the parliament or President will initiate to hold referendum to make changes to the Constitution. These issues will be solved after discussion.
MP said governmental agencies have not yet responded to NAP proposal. "I am a member of the parliament and I have a right to make such a proposal. Official attitude has nothing to do with this," Novruzov said.
NAP was established by the chairman of the Supreme Majlis of Nakhchivan Heydar Aliyev in 1992. The current President Ilham Aliyev is the chairman of the Party which has been ruling for already 15 years.
