Iran eyes to increase trade turnover with Tajikistan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 5. Iran aims to reach the value of its trade turnover with Tajikistan $500 million a year in the coming years, Iranian Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian said, Trend reports citing the ministry.

He made the remark at the 15th meeting of the Iran-Tajikistan Joint Economic Cooperation Commission in Tehran on December 5.

Mehrabian stressed that Iran's trade turnover with Tajikistan has increased three times since the current government came to power in the country (August 2021).

“The strengthening of cooperation between the two countries in many areas, including electricity, water, technology, tourism, foreign investment, healthcare, treatment, transport, railway, industry, banking, insurance and so on, is the spotlight,” he said.

According to the minister, since Tajikistan has water resources, it keeps the construction of Hydroelectric Power Stations in its agenda. Currently, the country has HPPs with a capacity to generate 6,500 megawatt-hours of electricity. A program has been prepared to increase the figure to 10,000 megawatt-hours.

He also added that Iranian companies are interested in the construction of Hydroelectric Power Stations in Tajikistan.

Speaking at the meeting, the Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, Daler Juma said that according to official statistics, the value of trade turnover between Iran and Tajikistan in October 2022 was about $182 million, which is an increase of 70 percent compared to the same month last Iranian year ($107 million).

Juma noted that Tajikistan can become a supplier of electricity in Central Asia by cooperating with Iran.

The trade turnover between Iran and Tajikistan amounted to 139,000 tons worth more than $131 million in the last Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022).
