Preparations for creating an energy exchange will be completed after six months, and start operating, the Zaman newspaper quotes head of the Energy Market Regulatory Authority of Turkey (EPDK) Hasan Goktas as saying on Thursday.

According to him, the state will own no more than 15 per cent of the energy exchange shares.

Goktas stressed that the creation of energy exchange will stabilise the price of electricity in the country and also contribute to the regulation of prices for electricity import and export.

In June 2012, Turkish state-owned Electricity Transmission Company (TEİAS) signed an agreement with European Energy Exchange to establish energy exchange in Turkey.

It was also reported that only Turkish companies, producers and consumers of electricity will be represented at the exchange in the first stage. Then the participation of countries that are part of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) will be considered.

ENTSO-E was established in July 2009 uniting the power network of ATSOI, BALTSO, ETSO, NORDEL, UCTE and UKTSOA associations which aims to ensure reliable operations, optimal control and the development of the European electricity transmission system in order to ensure energy security and meet the needs of the internal energy market.
