Eleven dead as heat wave strikes Croatia, Serbia

Eleven people have died in Croatia over the past four days amid a heat wave in the region, while temperatures in neighbouring Serbia meanwhile soared to nearly 40 degrees Sunday, dpa reported.

Media reports in Zagreb said the 11 deaths in the Adriatic Sea coastal town of Zadar were the result of heat stroke, but also by people drowning as they sought relief from the heat.

Doctors in a Zagreb hospital reported that the number of patients had doubled in recent days.
