Topical issues of the Uzbek-U.S. cooperation were discussed at a meeting of the Uzbek Foreign Ministry's leadership with the U.S. delegation headed by Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Elizabeth Jones, on Tuesday, the country's Foreign Ministry said.

The two sides exchanged views on international and regional issues, the Foreign Ministry said.

In recent years contacts between diplomatic missions of Uzbekistan and the United States have been intensified in connection with the U.S. intention to increase transit of non-military cargo to Afghanistan and from Afghanistan through this country in connection with the planned withdrawal of troops in 2014.

In August, a delegation headed by Senior Advisor of the U.S. State Department Thomas F. Daughton visited Uzbekistan, while a delegation led by Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Kurt Amend, as well as Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues Melanne Verveer in July.

In October, Director of the Central Asian Office at the U.S. National Security Council Lynn Tracy and Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Susan Elliott, as well as United States Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Marc Grossman and Germany's special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Michael Steiner held talks in Uzbekistan.

At present, Latvian Defense Minister Artis Pabriks is on a visit to Uzbekistan, who is negotiating with the government on transit of non-military cargo to Afghanistan and from Afghanistan. Latvian Embassy in Uzbekistan serves as the NATO liaison office.
