Gunmen opened fire on top Egyptian military commander in Sheikh Zuwaid area in Sinai, Military spokesman said on Wednesday, Xinhua reported.

Gunmen in a car coming from Rafah borders area attacked the convoy of the Commander of the Second Field Army, General Ahmed Wasfy, who was inspecting the security personnel at the area.

The commander's guards exchanged fire with the attackers and arrested the driver of the car, while other attackers ran away.

The guards seized the attackers' car in which they found an injured child who died after she was transferred to Arish hospital.

Two guns and a U.S. made field binoculars were found in the car. Security forces are in hunt for the escaped terrorists.

Early in the day at least two Egyptians including an army recruit were killed and six others were injured in another armed attack by extremists in North Sinai, near the border with Israel.

On Friday, at least five soldiers were killed in North Sinai in armed attacks by extremist Islamist groups on Arish Airport, a security camp in Rafah, a police station, two security checkpoints in Sheikh Zuwaid and other security premises.

The attacks came after the Egyptian army ousted President Mohamed Morsi last week in response to millions of protesters who demanded his removal due to his "maladministration" since he came to power a year ago. However, supporters of the Islamist-oriented president condemned the move as "a military coup" and vowed to sacrifice for Morsi's legitimacy
