There is an opinion among the residents of Baku that sometimes it is better to stay home and rest near the Caspian Sea than to go on vacation to Turkey or Egypt.

And from year to year it is becoming more and more popular among tourists worldwide to visit the beaches and resorts near the Caspian Sea in Azerbaijan.

In terms of physical geography, the Caspian Sea is a lake, rather than a sea. Its water is not as salty as in Turkey. All of Baku's beaches are sandy, rather than pebble, as in the world's many well-known resorts.

One can relax all year round due to the unique soft climate on the coast. It is possible to swim and sunbathe from May to September.

Baku's guests, who will arrive to watch the European Games in June, will have the opportunity to visit the capital's numerous beaches such as Shikhov, Mardakan, Hovsan, Buzovna, Zagulba, and Nardaran. By car some of them are just a 10-15 minute drive away from the sports facilities.

Baku 2015 is the first-ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent that will take place on June 12-28, 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
