According to the statement signed in Astana, Russia will intensify its mediation efforts to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Russian ambassador to Azerbaijan Vladimir Dorokhin told reporters on Sunday.

According to the ambassador, the latest meeting of the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia was a next contact to determine possible joint steps to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, after the summit in Astana.

Moscow hosted a meeting of foreign ministers of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov, Russia Sergei Lavrov and Armenia Edward Nalbaldyan on Dec. 9.

The sides discussed the issue of resolving the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the United States - are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
