European Parliament Defence & Security Subcommittee’s Chairman to Visit Tbilisi

Georgia, Tbilisi, 2 September / Trend corr. N.Kirtskhalia/ Chairman of the European Parliament's Subcommittee on Security and Defence Karl von Wogau is expected to pay a 2-day visit to Tbilisi on 4 September.

Karl von Wogau will meet with the Chairman of the Georgian Parliament's Committee for Defence and Security Givi Targamadze, Georgian Defence Minister David Kezerashvili. He also plans to meet with the representatives of the European Commission delegation and French Ambassador to Georgia Eric Furnier.

The European Parliament Subcommittee's delegation plans to visit Gori to meet with refugees and NGO representatives.

In the early morning of 8 August, large-scale military actions commenced in the unrecognized republic of South Ossetia. Georgian troops entered Tskhinvali. Later Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and forced back the Georgian servicemen.

On 12 August, Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev said he had decided to complete the operation on constraining Georgia to peace.

Russian peacekeeping troops and international observers remained in Georgia.
