BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 7
By Zeyni Jafarov – Trend:
Projects with Saudi Arabian Acwa Power and the UAE’s Masdar companies in Azerbaijan will ensure saving more than 300 million cubic meters of natural gas per year, Jabrayil Aliyev, Deputy Director of the Department for Management and Monitoring of Projects of the State Agency for Renewable Energy Sources (RES) of Azerbaijan, told Trend.
“Acwa Power will install a wind power plant with a capacity of 240 megawatts in Azerbaijan, and Masdar will set a solar power plant with a capacity of 230 megawatts. If both contracts are successfully implemented in the country, 1.5 billion kilowatts of electricity are projected to be generated per year. This will reduce emissions of 600,000 tons of CO2 and save 330 million cubic meters of natural gas per year. For now, the share of the renewable energy sources in the overall electricity industry of Azerbaijan makes up 17 percent. By 2030, this indicator is planned to be brought up to 30 percent,” Aliyev said.
According to Aliyev, the number of foreign companies interested in investing in renewable energy sources of Azerbaijan is increasing, adding that regular work is underway to implement a number of projects.
“Favorable geographical location of Azerbaijan allows using the renewable energy potential of the country in sufficient volume,” he added.
