BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. Three important documents were signed within COP29, President of COP29 Mukhtar Babayev said at the event "From Pledges to Action: Full Operationalization of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage," Trend reports.
He pointed out that COP29 member countries shouldn't beat around the bush when it comes to shelling out funds to put the agreements into action, as well as saving lives in the process.
“COP29 will be key for us to achieve the goals of solidarity for a green world. If we do not take action today to save nature and humanity, the consequences of this indecision will create very serious problems in the future,” he said.
Executive Director of the Loss and Damage Response Fund, Ibrahima Cheikh Diong, noted that COP29 should focus on mitigation measures.
“We expect these measures to revolutionize innovations in the field of combating climate change. I hope certain decisions will be taken in Baku,” he noted.
According to co-chair of the Board of Directors of the Loss and Damage Response Fund, Jean-Christophe Donnellier, the parties' conduct of constructive discussions at COP29 will facilitate comprehensive progress on climate finance.
“I want to thank the entire global community for the attention shown to this prestigious event. Every country should realize that providing climate finance, even if it is not an easy task, is bound to find a solution,” he said.
After all was said and done, a handshake deal was struck between the Loss and Damage Response Fund and the World Bank.
The next document signed was the partnership agreement between the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Loss and Damage Response Fund.
The Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources of the Philippines, Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga, pointed out that she believes it is important for every nation to participate in climate change activities.
“We had very productive discussions in meetings with the UNFCCC secretariat. We came to Baku with high hopes. We believe that achieving mitigation goals is not just a matter for the Philippines or any other country. Every country should be active here. The organization of the COP29 event opens important perspectives for the participating states,” she said.
