By Khalid Kazimov - Trend:

Iranian Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics Hossein Dehqan said that the Damavand destroyer is to help secure the Caspian Sea in favor of the littoral states.

Dehqan who was speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony to officially deliver the destroyer to the Iranian North Fleet stated that Iran would introduce more advanced destroyers in the near future, IRNA news agency reported on March 9.

He further said that Damavand could be used to fight terrorism and drugs as well.

The destroyer's design, construction, and slipping operations were entirely carried out by Shahid Tamjidi Industries Company, which is affiliated to Iran's naval industries.

Over 700 industrial and research centers, universities, and organizations cooperated on building the destroyer.

The Iranian Defense Ministry Electronic Industries Co. (SAIRAN) is responsible for 25 electronic and telecommunication systems worked into the destroyer.

The Iranian Aerospace Industries Organization has also contributed to the machine in terms of air defense equipment and surface-to-surface missiles.

The production of the Damavand destroyer started in 2010, according to the Iranian media outlets. It can carry helicopters, anti-ship missiles, surface-to-air missiles, and torpedoes. It is also equipped with electronic warfare devices.

Iranian officials say that the country is upgrading its warfare capabilities in the Caspian Sea in a bid to maintain peace and security along its coastal waters in the North.

Iranian Army's 4th Naval Zone Admiral Khordad Hakimi said last November that among the Caspian Littoral countries, only Russia has destroyers, and Iran's army should always be ready to tackle any threats.
