Baku, Azerbaijan, April 28

Trend:

There is no military solution to the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, said during a briefing Mark Toner, US State Department spokesman.

He stressed that tensions remain on the contact line in Nagorno-Karabakh.

"Our chairman of the Minsk Group - co-chair, rather - has visited the region. We have remained in contact with both governments, all sides in this conflict, and our message has been consistent, which is that we condemn in the strongest possible terms any violence along the Nagorno-Karabakh line of conflict and we need to see the peace process back up and running and as soon as possible", he said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
