By Azad Hasanli - Trend:

The gas is planned to be supplied from Iran, Iraq and Israel to Europe via the Southern Gas Corridor, Azerbaijani Minister of Energy Natig Aliyev said June 12.

Aliyev made this statement at a meeting with Eldar Saetre, new President and Chief Executive Officer of Norwegian Statoil ASA oil and gas company.

Saetre is on visit to Baku to attend the opening ceremony of the first European Games, the ministry said.

The minister said that the Southern Gas Corridor will improve gas supply of Europe.

While speaking about the current situation on the international gas markets, Saetre said that at present, ensuring energy security and reducing gas dependence are the priority issues for Europe.

The Southern Gas Corridor is one of the priority energy projects for the EU. It envisages the transportation of gas from the Caspian Sea region to the European countries through Georgia and Turkey.

At the initial stage, the gas to be produced as part of the Stage 2 of development of Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz field is considered as the main source for the Southern Gas Corridor projects. Other sources can also connect to this project at a later stage.

As part of the Stage 2 of the Shah Deniz development, gas will be exported to Turkey and European markets by expanding the South Caucasus Pipeline and the construction of Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline and Trans-Adriatic Pipeline.
