GM Uzbekistan increases car sales by four per cent in Russia

GM Uzbekistan JV sold 4807 cars in Russia in Jan, 2012, or four per cent more compared to Jan, 2011, the Automobile Manufacturers Committee of the Association of European Business said on Monday.

In particular in the first month of the year, the company sold 2959 Nexia cars (a five-per cent increase) and 1848 Matiz mini-cars (a three-per cent increase) on the Russian market.

According to the committee, the Nexia model ranked 14th among the best selling cars in Russia in the period and Matiz, 24th.

It was reported previously that GM Uzbekistan sold 92,778 cars in Russia in 2011, or 25 per cent more than the figure of the same period in 2010, 54,567 Nexia cars (a 24 per cent increase) and 38,211 Matiz mini-cars (a 25 per cent increase).

Some 6869 cars at the Uzbek car plant were sold on the Russian market in December (a one per cent decrease). According to the committee, Nexia car sales decreased by five per cent to 4059 whilst Matiz cars increased by seven per cent, to 2810 in December.

According to the information given, GM Uzbekistan ranked tenth in sales volumes to Russia in 2011. Nexia ranked ninth among the best sold cars, whilst Matiz is 17th.

UzDaewooAuto was established in 1996 on a parity basis by the Uzbek government and South Korea's Daewoo Motor Company.

In 2005 Uzbekistan Daewoo bought shares in the joint venture. In 2007 Uzavtoprom and General Motors signed an agreement to establish a basis for the GM Uzbekistan plant with charter capital of $266.7 million. The American side owns 25 per cent of shares plus one share in the enterprise, with the possibility of increasing it to 40 per cent. Currently, 75 per cent of the shares belong to Uzavtoprom.

At present, JV GM Uzbekistan produces seven models of cars, three of which are the Chevrolet - Captiva, Epica and Spark.

The company increased production by 2.1 per cent in 2011 to 221,445 cars compared to 2010.
The firm reduced production of Nexia cars by one per cent to 86,200 and of Matiz by 20.9 per cent to 57,775 and increased production of the Damas model by 0.4 per cent to hit 20,194.

The company increased production of Chevrolet Spark cars which it started to manufacture in August, 2010, by 3.7 times to 28,973 units. GM Uzbekistan decreased production of Lacetti cars by 0.1 per cent to 23,900, Captiva by 5.8 per cent to 1728 cars and Epica by 16 per cent to 2675 units.
