Nabucco gas pipeline project is an EU project. Its fate lies in the hands of the EU, Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Social and Political Department Chief Ali Hasanov said in an interview with Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyyet.

Nabucco project implementation lies in the hands of the EU," he added. "This project is an alternative to Russian gas supplied to Europe."

"Azerbaijan will be ready to begin working on this project implementation, if it is sure that Turkmenistan will supply gas for Nabucco," Hasanov said.

Nabucco gas pipeline is designed to transport gas from the Caspian region and Middle East to the European countries. The start of the gas pipeline's construction is scheduled for 2013, the first deliveries are expected in 2017.

The project's original concept envisages the construction of the pipeline with the length at 3,900 kilometres and capacity of 31 billion cubic metres of gas per year from the Georgian-Turkish and Iraqi-Turkish borders to Baumgarten. The project's shareholders are Bulgarian Energy Holding, Romanian Transgaz, Turkish Botas, Austrian OMV, German RWE and Hungary's FGSZ.

"Turkey buys a certain amount of gas from Azerbaijan at a price of 50 percent less than the world one," Hasanov said.

"If Turkey requires an additional amount of gas (over quota), it will be sold with a 30 percent discount," he said. "An even greater increase in the volume will lead to its sale with a 10 percent discount."
