Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has launched the construction of the Nenskra hydroelectric power station today in the Svaneti mountainous in Western Georgia.
Speaking with the Chinese partners and employees, Saakashvili called the start of the 210-megawatt hydroelectric power station construction as "grandiose" and "historic".
The construction of the hydroelectric power station on the river Nenskra near the village of Haishi will be conducted within five years. The Chinese side is the investor.
The President stressed that river beds of two rivers will be transferred to construct the power station.
"This will also be a solution to the problem of employment in these ravines, as 1,000 people will be involved in the construction, of whom 90 percent are local residents," Saakashvili said.
The President has signed an agreement to begin construction and laid the first stone of the new hydroelectric power station.
About $630 million was invested in the construction of Nenskra hydroelectric power station.
