Council of Europe calls upon Azerbaijan to elect mayor of capital
Azerbaijan, Baku, September 10 / Trend , E.Ostapenko / President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Council of Europe Ian Micallef called on Azerbaijan to follow the example of other countries of South Caucasus and make elected the post of mayor of capital, but not appointed, the official statement by the Council of Europe says.
''I reiterate our calls on the Azerbaijani authorities, to have the Mayor of Baku elected and not appointed. This will serve to reinforce local democracy in the country,'' Micallef said prior to his visit to Azerbaijan.
Election of mayor of Baku will be consistent with the spirit of the European Charter of Local Self-Government, which Azerbaijan ratified in 2002, said Micallef.
Micallef's visit will last from 10 to 14 September. The purpose of the visit is to assess the democratic situation in the country after the constitutional referendum held on March 18.
