Copper production volume to reach 500,000 tons in Iran

The copper anode production will reach 500,000 tons in Iran per year after the Sunqun Copper Smelting Plant is commissioned in the country’s western East Azerbaijan province in the near future, executive director of the National Iranian Copper Industries Company Ardeshir Saad Mohammadi said.

Mohammadi made the remark at the event dedicated to several projects which are implemented at the Sungun Copper Complex in Varzagan county of the province, Trend reports referring to the website of the Iranian Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade.

“After the commissioning of the third phase of the plant in the complex, the copper cathode production will increase by 100,000 tons,” the executive director added.

Mohammadi added that by the end of the year, the country's copper smelting capacity will reach 400,000 tons.

The executive director said that construction of three phases has been launched in the complex on Dec. 21.

"Taking into account the increasing demand for copper in the world, Iran is trying to gain a significant share in copper supply in the world besides meeting 20 percent of the neighbouring countries' needs," Mohammadi said.

Iran exported copper cathode worth $475 million, copper concentrate worth $144 million from March 21 through October 22.
