World Bank to participate in number of wide-scale projects of Uzbekistan

The World Bank is working on new large-scale projects in Uzbekistan, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan.

This was announced during a video conference between Uzbek Deputy Prime Minister Sardor Umurzakov and World Bank Vice-President for Europe and Central Asia Anna Bjerde.

The sides discussed the current bilateral cooperation, the results of implementation of a portfolio of joint projects in the first half of the year, the progress in coordinating projects under preparation, as well as promising directions for further cooperation with the World Bank.

It was noted that at the end of the first half of 2020 the volume of the World Bank's borrowed funds amounted to $310 million, and the absorption rate reached one of the highest rates in the region.

Bjerde said that nine new projects in the sphere of telecommunications technologies, energy, commercialization of science, urban development, forestry, as well as improvement of the systems of collection and processing of statistical data and tax administration worth $1.5 billion are currently under active consideration.

A special role of World Bank in the implementation of wide-scale reforms in Uzbekistan has been underscored during the negotiations.

In this context, further actions have been deliberated in the framework of joint work in reforming state-owned enterprises, banking sector, aviation sector and other sectors of economy in Uzbekistan.
