In total, 6.26 trillion rials (about $149 million) has been paid to tea farmers in Iran for purchased tea leaves, from the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2021) to October 12, the Chairman of the Iran Tea Organization, Habib Jahansaz said, Trend reports citing Iranian Ministry of Agriculture Jihad.
According to Jahansaz, this means 88 percent of the total money for purchased wheat has been paid to farmers.
“So far, 126,000 tons of tea leaves have been purchased from farmers in Iran. As a result, 28,300 tons of dry tea was produced, which is an increase of 4 percent, compared to the same period last Iranian year,” he added.
The chairman stressed that about 30,000 tons of Iran's annual tea needs are met domestically, and the rest by imports. So, Iran imports 62,000-70,000 tons of tea per year from India, Sri Lanka, Kenya, and the UAE.
Jahansaz also noted that 1 kg of dry tea is produced from every 5 kg of tea leaves.
As reported, the price of first-grade tea leaves is 66,900 rials (about $1.59), and the second-grade tea leaves are 44,800 rials (about $1.06) in this season.
